Student Experiences

As an International Baccalaureate School, University Elementary students learn how to learn, to think critically, to pursue answers to their questions through inquiry, and to take action. These skills build from Pre K through 6th grade and culminate in the Exhibition, an in-depth project on a social or environmental issue. Students search out varied sources and perspectives on a topic. Students engage in the inquiry process to take action in a local or global capacity. Projects are balanced; while self-initiated and designed, they are also collaborative in planning, inquiring, and assessing.University Elementary offers a variety of extra-curricular opportunities for students across all grade levels including Chess Club, Robotics, Choir, Band, Strings, Chinese Club, Spanish Club, Knitting Club, Science Club, Running Club, Kiwanis Kids, Coding Club, Yoga, Gardening, and Harry Potter Club. There's something for everyone!

Community Partnership

Each year in November, University Elementary hosts the Global Community Potluck which brings families together from around the world to share a key component of everyone’s culture: food! ENrich Tutoring is a service learning partnership with Indiana University. Students new to English are partnered with an IU student. This program provides both the students and tutor with a rich experience, allowing them to learn from each other. The local Kiwanis Club of South Central Indiana serves as University’s K-Kids Club Sponsor. K-Kids plan, organize, and complete service projects to support and better our school community, nation, and world. Regardless of the project or activity being completed, K-Kids helps students build critical thinking and leadership skills through service to others. Second grade students partner with the Monroe County History Center to make connections with the past by exploring relics during their “Then and Now” Unit of Inquiry. Fifth grade students partner with the IU Maurer School of Law during their “Where we are in Place and Time” Unit of Inquiry as they stage a mock trial at the IU Maurer School of Law.
